Designs

In 1971 Bob Hines and Ron Poulter wrote: During our various exhibitions quite a number of visiting members have said "I'd like to build a G1 engine but I just don't know where to start". Bob and Ron went to describe the construction of an 0-6-0 live steam engine universally known as The Project. Many, many Project locos have been constructed, and a great variety of other 0-6-0 outline locos have been made which internally use the Project design. Ron and Bob's original slim text has gone through five major editions, and it is still our best selling book.

Thus began G1MRA's tradition of self-build model guides, supported by suppliers who can provide many parts for these well-proven designs. More recently, the advent of low-cost commercial 3D printing services has enabled us to offer low cost kits and Ready-to-Run models such as the Greenly engine, creating a new entry level for Gauge 1 running. Our 3D circle maintains an archive site with a wealth of printable Gauge 1 CAD models for those with their own 3D printing capability.

The Greenly starter engine is designed as a low-cost entry to Gauge 1 running. It has full radio control with 'cruise control', a powerful 5-pole motor, a flickering firebox light and a smoke generator that puffs. The engine will run for a couple of hours on a single charge and can pull 30 axles at speed with ease. Kits and Ready-to-Run engines are on sale here.

You can read the build guide for the kit here - latest version 17 June 2026.
